Time Flies: 35 Years of Flash Memory

Time Flies - 35 Years of Flash Memory

You’ve probably heard that 2022 marks the 35th anniversary of KIOXIA inventing flash memory – but did you know that, back in 1987, the invention was viewed by others as ‘a solution looking for a problem?’ It’s true. Our breakthrough innovation took some time to catch on – it wasn’t until the 1990s that NAND flash began finding its markets–and customers.

And, of course, the rest is history. Today, flash memory has created an almost $70 billion market1 and has become a fundamental storage technology widely used in an endless array of systems and devices.

Interested in learning more about flash memory’s incredible journey? As part of their 70th anniversary celebration, the team at Electronic Design asked us to take a look back at the last 35 years of NAND flash – and our recollections and insights can be found here: https://www.electronicdesign.com/technologies/embedded-revolution/document/21255379/kioxia-flash-memory-a-historical-retrospective.

Flash memory has come a long way over a remarkably short time – and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
